The AutBus (Autonomous Bus) project is a collaboration between OTH Amberg-Weiden and AVL.
An autonomously operating bus line in the region transports residents from A to B. Passengers can book their ride with the help of an app.
The goal is to design a flexible, cost-effective and climate-neutral solution for more mobility in rural regions. The focus of the AutBus project is on the development of the autonomous driving function, the construction of the demonstrator and the necessary infrastructure measures.
An initial trial phase will start in summer 2023.

Opening of the AutBus test track
Autonomous and climate-friendly – that’s the future of driving!
And this is exactly what is becoming reality in Roding, more precisely in Neubäu am See. AVL Software and Functions AutBus will start its trial operation today and in the future, it will take its passengers autonomously from Neubäu train station to the lakeside promenade and back. The bus is still being tested without passengers and a safety driver is also on board to monitor the traffic and the behavior of the AutBus during operation. However, the electrified, autonomous minibus is to be further developed after the successful test phase and gradually transferred to regular operation.
The automated minibus was developed in close cooperation with the OTH Amberg-Weiden and supported by the Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Wirtschaft, Landesentwicklung und Energie. AVL Software and Functions’ Managing Director Dr. Georg Schwab is sure “that the AutBus can play a decisive role in keeping rural regions an attractive place to live for all age groups”.
The opening of the AutBus test track attracted numerous visitors including special guests from politics, industry, and research. Among the guests of honor were the Deputy Minister President of Bavaria and Bavarian Minister for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, Hubert Aiwanger, the District Administrator of the Cham District, Franz Löffler, and the Mayor of Roding, Alexandra Riedl.

Progress can be seen at our Mobility and Sensor Test Center in Roding, where the AutBus is already cruising on its own small test track directly on the company premises. For testing purposes only so far! Stay tuned for more information about the AutBus project and learn more about how this shuttle will improve mobility services for passengers in the area around Roding.

The AutBus can now be controlled by our very own AVL software. Great step forward for the realization of the AutBus project. Our vehicle returned from the assembly of the SpaceDrive system by Schaeffler Paravan Technologie GmbH & Co.KG and we already assembled the Sensors, DGT, Ajunic and HMI-components here at AVL in Roding. See in the video how the vehicle is driving without any safety-driver’s intervention.

The first year of exciting work on the AutBus project is almost over. Great concepts for the realization of an autonomous on-demand bus line for rural areas have been created and the software implementation has started. The test vehicle (VW T6.1 ABT electric) has been bought and the necessary conversions of the vehicle are in full swing. Thanks to our partner Schäffler Paravan.
Let’s continue this great success throughout the next project year!
